The Boise Boardwalk: A New Kind of Riverfront Destination

This summer, a new destination along the Boise River is bringing together dining, design, entertainment, and the easy pleasure of staying awhile.

There's something immediately appealing about a place built around the river.

The water, open sky and steady movement along the Boise River Greenbelt create a setting that feels active without feeling rushed. Cyclists pass through. Friends meet for drinks. A quick stop for dinner has a way of turning into an evening outside.

That experience is at the center of The Boardwalk in Garden City.

Located directly along the Greenbelt, the riverfront plaza has welcomed several new dining concepts and an expanded schedule of live entertainment and community events in 2026. The result is a destination that offers more than a collection of restaurants. It gives visitors a reason to arrive without a rigid plan and stay longer than expected.

A New Mix of Restaurants

The Boardwalk’s current lineup brings several distinct options together in one riverfront setting.

Descanso on the Greenbelt is an open-air, drinks-first bar serving spritzes, wine and cocktails from a large, dog-friendly patio. Although it does not have its own kitchen, guests can order food from participating Boardwalk restaurants using QR codes at their tables.

Those restaurants include Spitfire Tacos + Tequila and Ground Rules, both of which opened at the property in 2026. Spitfire serves tacos, burritos and agave-focused cocktails, while Ground Rules offers burgers, wings, beer and bourbon in a modern sports-bar setting.

They join Chicken in a Barrel, known for its barrel-smoked barbecue; Negranti Creamery + Coffee, which specializes in small-batch sheep’s milk ice cream; and Laissez Faire Wine Co., a relaxed tasting room focused on European-style wines.

The variety makes the plaza easy to experience in different ways. It can be a stop for ice cream during a Greenbelt ride, a casual family dinner or a longer evening that begins with tacos and ends over a glass of wine by the river.

Designed for Staying Awhile

What makes The Boardwalk work is not simply the number of choices. It is the way they share the same setting.

The restaurants open onto a central plaza with outdoor seating and direct access to the Greenbelt. Descanso’s patio extends that experience closer to the river, giving walkers and cyclists an easy place to stop without leaving the rhythm of the trail behind.

The property’s operators have described their goal as creating a connected experience rather than a group of unrelated storefronts. That approach is visible in details such as shared ordering, coordinated events and programming designed to bring activity into the plaza throughout the week.

A planned fifth-floor cocktail bar, Peregrine Overlook, is expected to add another layer to the property. Renderings show a circular wood bar, outdoor seating and wide views across the Boise River. An adjoining event space is also planned for private gatherings, weddings and business events.

While an opening date has not yet been confirmed, the rooftop concept reflects the larger idea behind The Boardwalk: making the setting part of the reason people visit.

Friday Nights on the Greenbelt

That idea comes to life most clearly during the Greenbelt Night Market.

Held every Friday from 5 to 9 p.m., the market brings local vendors, food and live music into the plaza. Originally planned as a summer event, it has been extended through September 25, giving visitors several more chances to experience The Boardwalk as the season begins to change.

The evening does not require much of an itinerary. Visitors can browse the market, choose dinner from one of the restaurants and settle in for live music as the light shifts over the river.

Descanso also hosts local musicians from 5 to 7 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting. Together, the recurring events give the plaza a sense of activity while keeping the experience casual.

That balance feels particularly well suited to Garden City, where tasting rooms, studios, restaurants and outdoor recreation often sit within a short walk or bike ride of one another.

The Greenbelt as a Front Door

The Boise River Greenbelt is usually described as a recreational trail, but it also serves as a connection between neighborhoods, parks and local businesses.

At The Boardwalk, it functions almost like a front door.

Visitors can arrive by bicycle or on foot, stop for a drink or meal and continue along the river. That kind of access changes the experience of a dining destination. The trip itself becomes part of the outing rather than simply the route there.

It also reflects something increasingly important in the Treasure Valley’s growth. Residents want places where dining, recreation and community life can overlap. They want to be able to spend time outside without traveling far from home or planning an entire day around it.

The Boardwalk responds to that interest by bringing several experiences together in one setting.

The Boardwalk doesn't feel like a conventional shopping center, nor is it trying to recreate a traditional downtown. Its identity comes from its location and the mix of experiences gathered around it.

As Garden City and the larger Treasure Valley continue to evolve, places like The Boardwalk show how thoughtful development can connect dining and entertainment with the landscape around them.
