Micron Is Building Boise’s Next Chapter

From a new generation of semiconductor manufacturing to a $10 billion research campus, Micron’s expanding Boise presence is helping shape the future of the Treasure Valley.


Micron has been part of Boise’s identity for nearly five decades. The company began here in 1978 as a four-person semiconductor design operation working from the basement of a dental office. Today, it's a global leader in memory and storage technology.


Now, Micron’s hometown presence is entering a new phase.


Across southeast Boise, the company is building the first of two planned semiconductor fabrication facilities, commonly known as fabs. It has also opened a new workforce training center and announced Micron Research Labs, a long-term research initiative headquartered in Boise and backed by a planned $10 billion investment over the next decade.


Together, these projects represent far more than a larger corporate campus. They are positioning Boise as an important center for advanced manufacturing, semiconductor research and the technology behind artificial intelligence.


A New Generation of Manufacturing 


Micron plans to build two leading-edge, high-volume memory fabs alongside its existing research and development operations in Boise.


The company expects the Idaho projects to create more than 17,000 jobs, including employment at Micron and jobs related to construction and the broader regional economy. Construction milestones have already been reached at the first fab, where DRAM output is scheduled to begin in 2027.


DRAM, or dynamic random-access memory, is a key component in everything from personal computers and smartphones to data centers and artificial intelligence systems. The Boise facilities are also expected to support products such as High Bandwidth Memory, a specialized form of memory designed to handle the enormous amounts of data required by advanced AI applications.


Locating manufacturing alongside Micron’s existing research operations is an important part of the plan. According to the company, bringing the two functions together can help speed the development and production of new technologies.


That means some of the memory powering the next generation of computing could be researched, developed and manufactured in Boise.


From Manufacturing to Innovation


Facilities at this scale require a highly-trained workforce. In August 2026, Micron opened a 60,000-square-foot training center near its Boise campus to help prepare employees and students for careers in semiconductor manufacturing.


The center includes up to 20 semiconductor process tools that replicate the equipment used inside a working fab. New hires can receive hands-on instruction in manufacturing systems and fab operations before beginning work on the production floor.


The facility will also serve students from the College of Western Idaho. Beginning in fall 2026, CWI will offer its Advanced Mechatronics Engineering Technology and Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology programs at the center, alongside Micron’s registered apprenticeship program.


Micron and the U.S. Department of Commerce have provided $3 million to CWI for equipment, classroom space and educator compensation connected to the partnership.


For the Treasure Valley, the center creates a clearer path between local education and jobs in advanced manufacturing. It also makes Micron’s investment more accessible to people who may not have previously considered a career in the semiconductor industry.


A New Research Hub in Boise

Just days before opening the training center, Micron announced another major investment in Boise’s future.


Micron Research Labs will be a long-term research institution focused on memory technology, computing architecture, advanced packaging and future semiconductor manufacturing. The initiative is backed by a planned $10 billion investment over the next decade.


Its centerpiece will be a flagship Boise facility capable of hosting hundreds of researchers. Micron expects to break ground in 2027. The larger investment will also support university collaborations, global satellite labs and partnerships involving government, startups and other technology companies.


The lab is intended to focus on research that looks beyond current product cycles and even beyond the next decade of technology. It will also host conferences, workshops and other research events in Boise.


This adds another dimension to Micron’s expansion. Boise will not simply be a place where advanced memory is manufactured. It will also be a place where researchers work on the ideas and technologies that could shape what comes next.


What the Growth Means for Boise

An investment of this size will reach beyond Micron’s campus.


Thousands of new jobs will bring more workers, contractors, suppliers and families into the Treasure Valley. That growth will affect demand for housing, transportation, education, childcare and other community services.


Micron has acknowledged those needs through its Idaho Community Investment Framework, which includes a planned $75 million investment over 10 years. The framework focuses on workforce development, STEM education and community partnerships. It also identifies transportation, housing and onsite childcare as areas connected to the company’s expansion.

For Boise, the challenge will be supporting new economic opportunities while preserving the qualities that continue to draw people to the region.


Those qualities include access to the foothills, the Boise River and the Greenbelt, but also the ease and sense of community that have historically distinguished the Treasure Valley from larger technology centers.


Technology Meets the Idaho Lifestyle

Boise has long been known as a place where outdoor access and city living can exist side by side. Micron’s expansion adds another layer to that identity.


The region is increasingly able to offer careers in advanced technology without asking residents to give up proximity to trails, open space or the river. That combination may appeal to engineers, researchers and other professionals who want both meaningful career opportunities and a more balanced daily life.


For the residential market, this shift is likely to influence what buyers value. Proximity to major employment centers will matter, but so will spaces that support working from home, gathering with family and moving easily between indoor and outdoor living.


The most thoughtful homes will respond to both sides of Boise’s growth. They will provide the technology, flexibility and function expected by a changing workforce while remaining connected to the landscape and lifestyle that make Idaho distinctive.


A Long-Term Investment

Micron’s expansion will unfold over many years. DRAM output from the first new fab is scheduled to begin in 2027, and the company’s larger vision includes a second fab, continued workforce development and a new center for long-term research.


This is not a short period of construction followed by a return to business as usual. It is an investment that could influence Boise’s economy, workforce and physical growth for decades.


Micron’s story began in Boise with four people and an ambitious idea. Nearly 50 years later, the company is once again betting on its hometown as a place to build what comes next.


As that work moves forward, Boise is evolving with it, becoming a city where global technology and the Idaho way of life can share the same address.
